Free Chamber Music Post #4

To my friends and colleagues in instrumental music, this is the fourth in a series of free chamber music pieces that I am making available. Each year my family vacations at the beach. It is a peaceful time to recharge, refresh, laugh, and share precious time together. I am constantly amazed by the life of the ocean and the stunning scenes that I find in the beauty of nature.

Abalone Sunset is small glimpse of my perception of evening time at the beach. While a full band setting is in production, I hope this reduced instrumentation version (i.e. Flex Band, Chamber Music, Small Ensemble) may be helpful to instrumental music educators this fall as they work with their students. The score and audio (below) is for four flutes, however the full range of free parts available below allow the piece to played by any combination of wind instruments. A reduced instrumentation version for mallet instruments will be available in the next few weeks. This piece (both the flexible instrumentation and full band version) is intended for use with Middle School or Junior High Musicians.

The piece is about two minutes in length, and the technical range should be very comfortable for most mid-level musicians. Throughout the work it is vital that each musician listens for the lead line, and balances their part accordingly. There are some articulations indicated, but overall musicians should strive for a unified legato articulation. As I recognize the challenges ahead in the fall, the need for ensemble music for chamber groups may be vital. Please share this post with your network of friends teaching instrumental music. If you are able to use it, please let me know so that we might share the good work of your students on my Facebook page. Best wishes!

The percussion parts included below are for bells, vibraphone, and marimba shared between two players. The mallet parts are slightly different in construction from the numeric parts provided for the winds. The marimba part is shared between 2 players, and marimba and vibes call for a soft yarn mallet.
