“A New Sheriff in Town” is an ideal grade 2 overture/festival piece for Middle School or Junior High Band.
Nearly 12 years since “The Last Stagecoach Heist” was published, this work completes the story that was originally intended to be “A Cowboy Suite” for middle school band. The first two movements have been re-imagined to become a single stand-alone work using the bulk of materials from the sketches developed twelve years ago. The sections (“A New Sheriff” and “Tumbleweeds”) are contiguous with a short transitions in between. There are rhythmic motifs (heard from the first bar of the piece) and a transitional section (at m. 25) that are specifically connected to “The Last Stagecoach Heist”. While each piece can be played apart in a concert setting, they are ultimately meant to partner up (you see what I did there) and share the spotlight on the same concert performance.
